Job Responsibilities


Job Summary:

The Program Coordinator for Sustainable Agriculture and Natural Resources (SANRE) in
collaboration with the State Program Leader (SANRE) will oversee all county extension
operations, that will include program planning, implementing, evaluations and reporting. The
candidate will assist the State Program leader in compiling the Extension Annual Plans of Work
and Annual Report of Accomplishments to be submitted to USDA/NIFA. Will also, coordinate in-service training for County Extension agents and supervise students for their experiential learning during the Academic year and Summer Internship Program. Furthermore, will perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Extension Administrator.

Job Functions/Duties/Responsibilities:

Assist in reviewing and editing educational materials developed by the SANRE State Program
Leader. Oversee all county extension operations, that will include program planning, implementing, evaluations and reporting. Assist in collecting monthly/quarterly activity reports from the 1890 Regional County agents Assist in the development, implementation, and the evaluation of professional training programs to equip 1890 Extension Agents with core skills needed to build vibrant and effective SANRE signature programs.

Assist in the organization of monthly meetings and/or conference calls with the SANRE
Extension regional county agents and relevant staff. Communicate on a regular basis with state and regional leaders on key SANRE matters. Collaborate with the SANRE Program Leader in acquiring extramural funding and fees to support the SANRE Extension programs

Collaborate in conducting applied research in support of the SANRE Extension program and
Clemson University to remain abreast of current research and other developments in community and economic development. Actively participate in professional activities at the state and national levels.

Individual will work with other Program Coordinators and staff in short-term and long-term
planning to develop statewide initiative plans which reflect the program needs and priorities for
the counties, as well as the state and federal commitments.
The candidate will supervise students for their experiential learning during the Summer
Internship Program.
Furthermore, will perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Extension Administrator.

Required Skills/Abilities:

The employee must be able to use good judgment in making decisions, exhibit a good working
relationship with people, and highly dependable in planning, implementing, and reporting
activities.
Individual must be able to relate to diverse disadvantaged rural/urban people as well as
professionals. Individual will work with other Program Coordinators and staff in short-term and long-term planning to develop statewide initiative plans which reflect SANRE program needs and priorities for the counties, as well as the state and federal commitments.

Strive to establish and maintain excellent working relationships with other employees, technical
staff, management, vendors and executive level staff within and outside of 1890.

Education and Experience:

Master's degree in agriculture, natural resources and the environment with at least three years of relevant work experience. Individual should possess knowledge of the Land-Grant University
System and the history, philosophy, organization and objectives of 1890 Cooperative Extension.
Experience in planning, implementing, and evaluating educational programs; ability to work
with adults to recruit, train and manage volunteers is required. Ability to communicate
effectively, both orally and in writing; computer/computer software knowledge is required.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills are also required.

Preferred Education and Experience:

Masters or Doctorate degree in agriculture, natural resources, and the environment. Three or
more years of relevant work experience. Three or more years of coordinating experience
involving multiple, full-time direct reports. Involved in applied research experience in a relevant
field. Familiarity with agriculture, commercial horticulture, natural resources and other
alternative enterprises. Has basic knowledge of Cooperative Extension and Land
institutions. Can assist in planning, leading, and implementing strategic organizational initiatives.

Has basic innovative skills to create new programs. Is committed to fostering teamwork and
collaborative work environments.

Supervisory Responsibilities :

Individual will supervise students for their experiential learning during the academic year and the Summer Internship Program. Will assist the Program Leader to train regional agriculture
extension agents.
Work Environment:

May assist the SANRE Program Leader to conduct visit farms, ranches, hatcheries, dairies,
stables, orchards, fields, bee farms, aquaculture facilities, and a variety of other agricultural
business locations during the day. Often travels to and from work sites in a truck, car, or van.
May be exposed to a variety of temperatures and weather conditions. Occasionally may be
exposed to the diseases and infections of farm animals.
Physical Requirements:

Sometimes, working with farmer may include moving objects up to 50 pounds. Ability to operate a motor vehicle and other farm equipment. Must be able to walk, talk, see, hear, bend and stoop.

Travel Requirements:

Overnight in-state and out-of-state travel is required (extensive statewide travel is required).
Application Requirements/Special Instructions:
This position is federally funded by the Farm Bill (Agriculture Improvement Act) Section 1444,
Agricultural Extension Activities at 1890 Land-Grant Institutions / Section 1445, Agricultural
Research Activities at 1890 Land Grant Institutions.
The individual will be housed in the administrative office located in Orangeburg, SC.

The individual must have the ability to perform duties on own initiative while receiving minimal
supervision. The employee must be able to use good judgment in making decisions, exhibit a
good working relationship with people, and highly dependable in planning, implementing, and
reporting activities. Individual must be able to relate to diverse disadvantaged rural/urban people as well as professionals.


A valid driver's license is required.
